Mr. Speech Man! New Stuttering Materials!

Remember Dr.Ramig's  "Speech Man" from the stuttering foundation's "Treating the school-age child who stutters" video?  I've been  searching  for  some clip  art to  make  my  own  speech  man  and finally  found something  on  Teachers Pay Teachers.  Dr. Ramig used  "speech man" as a way of teaching students that stutter about their articulators.  Here's my speech man, clip art by  "Phillip and Gary Martin" on Teachers pay Teachers.

From  "Fluency packet: preschool-first grade," at www.teacherspayteachers.com/store/speechy.
It's especially helpful for disfluent students that have an abnormal breathing component to their stuttering because it  shows the respiratory system.  You can show the child where the "speech helpers" are located on speech man and explain that sometimes, we feel changes in our speech helpers when our words get  bumpy or stuck.  Our eye brows may raise, our nose may wiggle, our lips get tense or our air gets "stuck" near our voicebox.  My fluency packet also comes with other activities to use with speech man!   I hope  you find him useful with your students!!

Fluency resources:  American Speech Language Hearing Association and Stuttering Foundation Homepage.  I also really like Judith Kuster's University of Minnesota page.   Last of all, here's a link to a great handout to download and give to parents who are asking about whether or not their preschool-aged child's stuttering will persist beyond their preschool years:  Risk Factors for Stuttering.

             Thanks for the visit!           Donna
